Anthropic files S-1, founders zero in on 900% retention
Dan Shipper and Greg Isenberg pulled the figures that actually matter to small software businesses.
Anthropic filed an S-1 registration statement with the SEC for a proposed IPO, and the founders we follow went straight past the narrative to the figures.
Dan Shipper's read is five lines long. Revenue up 1,300% year over year in the first half of 2026, GAAP operating profitable, 85% gross margin, 900% revenue retention, and 80% of revenue coming from models released in the last six months.
Greg Isenberg's takeaways put numbers on the same curve from a different angle. He reads $6.6M in revenue per employee, and net revenue retention of approximately 900% as of September 30, 2026, which he frames against the 120% that good SaaS companies brag about. Customers, in other words, spend about 9x more after a year. He also notes the company did $41M in revenue three years ago and $16.3 billion in the first six months of 2026, and says nobody has a mental model for that curve, himself included.
Good SaaS companies brag about 120%.
Big companies buy where their budget already lives, and the lesson for founders selling to enterprises is to get listed where your buyers already spend.
The line a bootstrapper can act on
The most usable item in Isenberg's list is not a growth figure. He reads that nearly half of revenue, about 48%, comes from customers buying through cloud marketplaces. His lesson for anyone selling to enterprises is to get listed where your buyers already spend, because big companies buy where their budget already lives.
Two other details are worth a founder's attention. Isenberg says Anthropic publishes its run rate formula in the filing, the last 28 days of usage times 13 plus subscriptions times 12, and wonders aloud whether that is the new ARR math. And he flags a line buried in the filing where Anthropic says the gap between what Claude can do and how widely it is used is one of its biggest growth opportunities. Isenberg's reading is that the company is telling you the models are ahead of the market, and someone has to close that gap for dentists, landlords and plumbers.
Isenberg also expects thousands of Anthropic employees to become liquid at once, and predicts the biggest wave of new AI startups and angel checks San Francisco has seen. That is a forecast, not a filing number, and worth holding loosely.
The business read is that the retention figure is the eye-catching one but the marketplace share is the one you can do something about this week. A 900% number tells you usage-based AI pricing compounds in a way seat-based SaaS never did. The 48% tells you where the enterprise money physically moves.
