dax says agent tinkerers are missing their early internet

One tweet, no numbers, and a question worth asking about where your week went.

dax posted that he used to wonder why most people missed out on building early internet products, and that he now understands it. His answer is the people around him. Too many of them, he says, are fiddling with their custom agent setup and too few are using the tool to actually make something.

That is the whole post. No numbers, no screenshots, no survey. It is an observation from someone who spends his time around people building with agents, and it is worth reading as exactly that rather than as evidence of a trend.

The same argument, from the other end

dax has been circling this point for weeks. Earlier this month he argued that custom agent workflows fix problems that no longer exist, because the models themselves had already closed the gaps those workflows were built to paper over. That was a technical claim about whether the scaffolding helps.

This one is about what the scaffolding costs you. Not tokens, not setup time, but the window. If you believe the comparison he is drawing, the people tuning their rig are spending the part of the cycle when products get built arguing about how to build them.

The business read

There is a reason tool configuration feels productive. It is legible, it ends in a working thing, and nobody rejects your config. Shipping a product means a stranger has to want it, and that is a slower, worse-feeling loop. The tinkering is the procrastination that looks most like work.

It is also fair to push back. Some of the people dax is describing are building the agent tooling, and that is a product too. But if you are a founder and your last month of commits lives in your dotfiles rather than in something a customer touched, this is the tweet to sit with.

Nobody has numbers on how common that is. dax is one person looking around at the people he follows, and he said so.
