Marc Lou says DataFast plateaued at $30K MRR
Eight months to the first $3K, a year of growth, and now a flat line at the top.
Marc Lou wished DataFast a happy birthday and used the post to lay out the shape of the curve. The first eight months got the analytics tool to $3K MRR (monthly recurring revenue). After this year's growth it has plateaued at around $30K MRR and is tracking roughly 220 million page views a month.
The initial growth was really slow (8 months to $3K MRR), but I'm happy I pushed through because it taught me so much!
It's a great reminder that building a SaaS is hard and takes time.
His own summary of the lesson is short. Building a SaaS is hard and takes time.
The slow part lasted eight months
What makes the number worth sitting with is the ratio. Eight months of work to reach $3K MRR, then a year that multiplied it by ten, then a flat line. Lou does not say what caused the plateau or what he plans to do about it, so nobody knows yet whether this is a ceiling or a pause.
When he launched DataFast he posted it as an early version, priced cheaper, with a promise that anyone who subscribed before the official launch day would be grandfathered forever. The pitch was an analytics tool for founders to analyse traffic, find their best marketing channels and decide which product to focus on. That is the full public arc, from a launch post written in all caps about overthinking to a founder shrugging at a plateau.
The business read
This is the same founder who has been posting daily MRR updates for MailCheap, a newer email product that went from zero to real revenue in days. Those posts travel because the line goes up fast. DataFast is the other half of the same portfolio and it took eight months to clear $3K, which is the version that almost never gets screenshotted.
The $30K figure is in the same range as the $31K a month that ILIAS ISM counted for DataFast in a earlier tally of Lou's products, so the plateau has been visible for a while from outside.
All of these are Lou's own numbers, self-reported, with no public dashboard attached to this post. Treat them as what a founder says about his own business, which is still more than most people share.
Steal the numbers, not the vibes
