Theo says a $200 Claude sub bought $9,000 of Opus a month

Three accounts drained to zero, and the metered value of what came out was roughly 45 times the sticker price.

Theo says a $200 Claude Code subscription gets you around $9,000 of Opus usage a month, and he has the receipts from burning three accounts to prove it.

In his post he says he has managed to run three Claude accounts down to 0% since Opus 5.5 dropped. Analyzing their usage, the costs came out at $2,086, $2,442 and $2,182. He puts the average at $2,200 a week, which annualizes out to roughly $9,000 a month of metered value against a $200 bill.

That is one heavy user's own accounting, not an audited invoice. The numbers are what the usage would have cost at API rates, and the only way to produce them is to hammer the plan hard enough to hit zero three separate times. Most founders will never get close. But the ratio is the point, and it is roughly 45 to 1.

Why the math matters if you are paying for coding plans

This is the second time in a week the same gap has shown up from a different angle. A heavy Codex user reported earlier that the $200 Claude plan gave him about five times the usage he was getting elsewhere. Theo is measuring the same thing from the inside, in dollars.

The business read is that subscription coding plans are still priced well below what an aggressive user can pull out of them, and that is not a stable arrangement. Plans priced at a loss for the top few percent of users get rewritten, throttled or repriced, usually without much warning. If your unit economics assume today's flat rate holds, you are building on somebody else's pricing experiment.

The upside for now is real. If you are shipping every day with Opus 5.5, the sub is cheap relative to what the same tokens cost metered. Just do not treat the gap as permanent, and know what your cost line looks like if the plan changes underneath you.
